Garret Hack Seminar - February 2008
Again we were privileged to have a nationally known
woodworking instructor give a seminar for our guild this year.
On February 2-3, Garrett Hack presented a workshop on the
details of making fine furniture.
He started his presentation on Saturday morning with a slide
show of different furniture styles and some of the pieces he has
made over the years. The slide show included photos of his
workshop and farm in Vermont.
At the workbench he started with the scratch block and how to
use it to add fine detail to furniture. He showed how to make
small beads and dados in
furniture legs and aprons. Next he showed how to make a scratch
block and had each of us make our own from a piece of 1" ban saw
blade and a block of maple.
Next he demonstrated how to make and install a piece of inlay.
This was an involved process but the finished product was
perfect.
Sunday Garrett used the making of a drawer to demonstrate how to
make a sliding dove tail and a hand cut dovetail drawer front.
For more photos, see the
Slide Show.
A special thanks to Richard for hosting the seminar at his
workshop.
