Board of Directors Meeting - February 2008

The Board of Directors met February 24, 2008 at Mike Lonergan house.  This was the first Board Meeting for the newly elected president.

Here are some notes from the meeting:

Membership Chairman Remarks

One way to resolve our financial hiccup is to increase our membership.  That can only be done with your help and efforts. Introducing yourselves to guests and making them comfortable at the meetings and improving our programs are most important but we have to get them to the meetings first.  Here are some helpful hints:

1) The next time you are shopping drop the fact that you are a woodworker – e.g. I was having keys made at Home Depot in New Smyrna Beach, and while the clerk was making the key I dropped a remark about woodworking, Lo and behold he starts to tell me he is a woodworker and what he likes to build.

2) Ask your wife to mention that you do woodworking.  My guest at the last meeting was as a result of Beverly mentioning to a fellow worker at her once a week part-time job that I was a woodworker.  I am now working on getting him to be a member.  Most of us have adult children who could also be a source of letting people know about our club.

3) Let me know of anyone I can contact to get us regularly mentioned in local neighborhood newspapers, magazines, etc. or anyone you feel will be interested.  I’ll do the prospecting if you get me the contact’s name and how to contact.

Watch for an announcement of a membership contest.  It will run from March 1 to November 30, with a financial prize or prizes to be given at the Annual Holiday event.

Speaking of announcements watch for a new section in the newsletter called  â€œMembers in the Spotlight”.

David Macsay - Secretary/Membership chairman

Programs

Ron Moss announced at the Board Meeting that he has the following programs set up.  March – Pete Savickas.  Pete will bring in samples of wood that he uses and discuss all the factors that need to be taken in consideration so that you can make it do what you want it to do.  April – Craig Aebli will discuss the process of installing his custom built wooden floor in his home.  You may have seen the medallion he made and entered in the Annual Show and Tell.  May – Ray Kropp will discuss and maybe demonstrate the new techniques he learned at a recent hands-on seminar to make vases using the Ringmaster.  June – David Macsay.  I was asked at the last meeting about making picture frames and, unfortunately, being the club secretary it was not a good time to ask me because my mind was full with taking club notes.  Beverly and I have purchased a lot of art at art festivals and to save money I usually make the picture frames from scratch.  So I will do a presentation on making picture frames.

Ron Moss will be handing out questionnaires at the next meeting asking members for your input on what you want to have in our programs.  Please give this some serious thought after you read this newsletter and be prepared to complete the form.  Also think about giving of yourself and your knowledge and giving a program.

Each of our members has different interests and talents.  I was surprised to learn that some members that I considered highly talented had never made a picture frame.  So don’t assume anything.  None of us are talented speakers.  But each of us has something to give, and the easiest people to give it to are people who have an interest, that you meet with once a month, and that appreciate your giving.  Call Ron and volunteer to tell us what it is you do or have an interest in or know you know.  Even just educating us from what you have read is info well appreciated.
